Born into a musical family in Pertuis, France, Timothée Marcel began his cello studies with his father at the age of seven. From age nine to fourteen, he traveled alone on a weekly journey between Digne-les-Bains in the south of France and Paris to continue his studies. One of the youngest cellists to be admitted to the Paris Conservatory, he graduated in 2006 with highest honors in Cello Performance and Chamber Music Studies.
In the summer of 2005, Mr. Marcel performed with the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival as a young distinguished artist. In the winter of 2006, he soloed in Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major with the Santa Fe Symphony, to rave reviews. In France, he plays with l’Opéra National de Paris and l’Orchestre National de France and performs with the Trio Apollinaire and the Jean-Louis Florentz Cello Octet.
In 1998 and again in 2005, Mr. Marcel had the privilege to play for Mstislav Rostropovich. He has participated in chamber music festivals and concerts with Pinchas Zuckerman, Ilona Prunyi, Gary Hoffman, Yuja Wang, and Guillermo Figueroa. He has had the opportunity to play in many wonderful music halls including the Theater of the Champs-Elysées, The Institute of France, the Lensic Performance Center, The International City of the Arts in Paris, and the Awakening Museum.
Collaborating with artists from different genres is of great interest to Timothée. He recently performed in concert select movements from the Bach suites for solo cello with the dance company, Two Women Dancing, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. With his strong affinity for these magnificent works, he enjoys performing the Bach suites for solo cello in the acoustically resonant Church of Saint Ephrem in Paris.
Mr. Marcel currently plays a beautiful Gustave Bernadel cello made in Paris in 1892.
